Melbourne: choose the right NGV venue

A search for “NGV” may lead to two different buildings. Identify the collection, exhibition and address before planning the day around an entrance.

01

Two venues with different collections

NGV locates NGV International at 180 St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Fed Square. The first presents international art and design; the second Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous works. Choose what you want to see, then check the venue named for that exhibition.

02

General collections and special exhibitions

The visit page lists free general entry, while special exhibitions may carry charges. This does not establish that every exhibition you choose is free. Check the specific programme’s tickets, dates and admission conditions before comparing the cost of a day.

03

Our suggested plan: one gallery and a walk

Allow time for one venue, then add a walk and meal without stacking bookings. NGV asks visitors to cloak backpacks, large bags and umbrellas: prepare your belongings. For an evening elsewhere, calculate a separate return journey and check that venue’s conditions; the gallery does not establish admission to a gambling venue.

Practical reference

Compare stages before booking

Suggested routes are editorial proposals. Confirm opening times, prices and accessibility for your date with the venues cited.

Prepare costs and admission conditions

Fund the trip independently of any potential winnings. Tourism access to a site does not establish admission to its gaming rooms.
